SUBJECTIVENESS

SUBJECTIVENESS

I know, that sounds painful! Here’s the thing. Departing to join a Jet airway. I think that joining a jet airway direct from departure is very subjective. Bearing in mind that there are allowances in both the altitude and latitude you can join such an airway. What to do? Consider this, you have a departure “……..J90………Normy……..J70……..”

I normally deliver a clearance as follows (example only):-

Cleared to XXXX airport via the Seattle6 departure radar vectors Alder to join J1, then as filed, maintain 9000, expect FL350 10 mins after departure, departure frequency 125.600. squawk 1533”

This example gives the pilot some certainty. He knows exactly where to join the Jet Airway. The first INTERSECTION on the airway from the departure airport.

However, consider this – the departure above “…….. J90 …….. Normy ………. J70, then as filed”.

If, you join J90 at Normy, then you immediately depart Normy on J70. So, what to do? Is the clearance =
“Cleared to XXXX airport via the Seattle6 departure radar vectors Normy to join J90, then as filed, maintain 9000, expect FL350 10 mins after departure, departure frequency 125.600. squawk 1533”, or

“Cleared to XXXX airport via the Seattle6 departure radar vectors Normy to join J70, then as filed, maintain 9000, expect FL350 10 mins after departure, departure frequency 125.600. squawk 1533”, or

“Cleared to XXXX airport via the Seattle6 departure radar vectors to join J90, then as filed, maintain 9000, expect FL350 10 mins after departure, departure frequency 125.600. squawk 1533”

It’s great fun controlling……. Isn’t it?
