ZSE is a great place to fly and control in, thanks to our solid foundation of dedicated, professional controllers.  This foundation can only be maintained with training staff full of knowledgeable and helpful mentors.  Are you willing to join the team?  Here are the requirements for becoming a Mentor at ZSE:

  1. S2 rating or higher
  2. Meet monthly ARTCC controlling requirements as set forth in APS_001
  3. Home controller at ZSE (in good standing) for at least 90 days
  4. No disciplinary issues and remain in good standing with ZSE and VATSIM policies
  5. Able to consistently provide good training to our students on a regular basis
  6. ****Able to inspire controllers to get on and control...control...control****

There is no better feeling than knowing that YOU are part of the team keeping our ARTCC full of top-notch controllers.  Interested candidates need to email the training department [email protected] with the following information:

  1. Why do you want to become a Mentor?
  2. How many hours per month do you control in ZSE?
  3. What are the key values of a leader? How do you demonstrate these values?
  4. How frequently do you support others and get support from others?
  5. Have you ever given advice to a VATSIM controller or VATSIM pilot?
  6. How would you keep yourself and ZSE controllers involved and motivated?
  7. What could you do as a Mentor to help improve the ZSE ARTCC and controller activity?
  8. Do you have any disciplinary problems with VATSIM? If yes, explain.
  9. Is there anything that you feel would set you apart as a candidate for the Mentor position?

Additionally, a Resume and/or Letter of Intent is recommended (not required)

Upon receipt and review of your application, you may be contacted for a comprehensive interview. After the interview, you may be asked to complete any remaining VATUSA Academy S1 and S2 CBTs as well as the Instructor CBT.

Candidates not familiar with teaching in general and mentoring on VATSIM specifically will complete a Mentor In Training program. This will consist of sitting in on training sessions and providing feedback and notes to the mentor/student. Once the MIT feels ready, they will start teaching sections or the entirety of training sessions under the supervision of a mentor/instructor.

Before being appointed as mentor, candidates must pass the ZSE Mentor Examination. A grade of 90% or higher is required to pass.

The TA will be the judge of when the candidate is ready to become a mentor, usually through observing sessions conducted by the candidate.
